A day at work

A lot of people ask me what I do. I kind of have slightly fumbled answers about being a freelance writer, doing all sorts of things from travel articles to blogs to press releases. Flicking through my photographs recently I found this one, which I won’t ever use for anything in particular but it does provide a nice lead into explaining one angle of the work I do.

I took this when I was gathering quotes from workers on the Vodacom Beach Clean Up campaign in December. I was hired by Olivia Jones Communications to compile the press releases for the campaign due to my environmental background. This meant I had a very interesting two weeks contacting dozens of people ranging from ocean conservationists to politicians to previously unemployed folk. I took this photograph after chatting to an employee at Umdloti beach about her experiences.

A few weeks back I was commissioned to put together a girls surf mag, working from the Atoll offices. I duly arrived on my assigned day to start working with the quirky (nice way of putting it) Zigzag guys. Thank god there wasn’t enough room in their office, as I was shown into the adjoining room where the Blunt crew used to produce Blunt magazine. Continue reading
