Hunter S. would’ve downed a handful of change with bourbon

Hey yo, please click on the highlighted link if you’d like to read a three page story.  Raging Bulls of Change. It sure as shit ain’t poetry and it’s too long for a regular blog post, but maybe it’s relevant for some. Plus I have nowhere else to put it.

Green balls of curiosity in Waterval Boven

I found this picture while scrounging through all my millions of folders labelled things like ‘Stuff’, ‘Bits and Pieces’, ‘To Edit’ and other names that lead to ambivalence. Continue reading

Sunday Afternoons on the Bus

Today it was Sunday, the day of rest. It should really be spent chilling, drinking tea and watching illegal downloads. Especially since it was raining. Instead, I dragged my sorry ass out of bed to make the mission to Songjeong beach to go and collect my surfboard. It has been sitting there for two months, and I pay a rental fee to leave it there – so before it ticked over to 1st December I thought I best go collect it. Continue reading

Happy birthday to…blaaaargh!

I hate stories about how drunk people get. In fact I despise hearing lists of how much alcohol people consumed, unless it was me feeding the alcohol to them. I mean I am interested to know what colour your vomit comes out after mixing things with certain combinations, but really, ‘I drank 15 beers and 12 bottles of tequila’ does not really float my boat. So instead of telling you anything like that, I will just tell you about the sound effects I made when behaving like a first year university student on Friday night. Continue reading

Sleeping in Board Bags is over-rated, but Hello Kitty is always worth it.

One fine day a couple of weeks ago I had an absurd day. It was really fun, but utterly absurd. It started off with a day of climbing, as all good ones do… Continue reading

Eating Silkworm Larvae i.e. Dutch Courage

There is a local treat in South Korea that is pretty much the equivalent of peanuts. They are served in bars with your beers, and you can buy them from street vendors at most markets and temples. They’re called beondegi in Korean, but are more commonly known to wagugins (foreigners) as silkworm larvae. Continue reading

My Schools

I teach at two schools, and both are on Yeondo-gu. This is an island attached to the mainland by a bridge, it’s very beautiful and I dig living here. My main school is called Bong-sam Elementary, and the other is Taejongdae Elementary. This is just a brief synopsis of both, with a break down of the pro’s and con’s of working at both. Foreigners are fascinating to older folk.

I was eating dinner the other day with Song-yi, at a restaurant in central  Busan. It was one of those places where you leave you shoes at the door and sit on cushions at low tables, and we were seated by the window. I had just settled down to demolish my extremely tasty bowl of spicy pig’s back soup with rice, when I felt someone watching me. Continue reading

Hi! We don’t have an apartment for you, so how about a hotel?

So, the day after demo-classes was when we met the teachers from our schools! Absolutely wrecked from the night before, they must have been delighted at the motley crew that were going to teach Korea’s future generations. My co-teachers, Minjoo and Song-Yi had been out with me the night before, so we were all feeling pretty crap. When you all feel crap together its way more bearable. Anyhoo, I met Enhee Choi from Bong-sam Elementary, who was very sweet and told me ‘We haven’t sorted out accommodation for you yet, so we are putting you in a hotel, is that okay?’ Continue reading
